FREE Science & Engineering Club

Take part in a FREE extracurricular creative education programme at The University of Salford where Club members will take part in a Science & Engineering Club.

This programme is open to 13–16-year-olds of all abilities (Years 8, 9, 10 & 11) and in particular works to engage those who may face additional barriers to success. It’s a unique model and taking part can be a transformational opportunity for young people: you can hear from past members in this short film.

Extensive research shows 95% of National Saturday Club members build their practical skills, 89% grow in confidence, and 76% understand more about further study and career. Many young people credit the Club with positive impacts on their academic studies:

“My communication skills have improved in class, so I am able to get more work done which helps me achieve better at school” National Saturday Club member

This year they will be running a Science & Engineering club based around the topic of Conservation. It will run from January to June at the Peel Park Campus.

Here’s a description of the programme from the club tutor Charlotte:

“Welcome to Science & Engineering STEM Saturday Club here at The University of Salford. We are a team looking to welcome students eager to engage with science, technology, engineering and mathematics, making learning accessible to all. This year our focus is on animal conservation in the wake of climate change, focusing on ways we can support our local wildlife as well as more endangered species. Our focus will range from working with Salford rangers in our local parks, to learning about endangered species and conservation work.

As part of the Saturday Club, students will have the opportunity to meet and work with university experts in zoology, animal cognition and the biodiversity of our planet, as well as current university students. As part of our sessions, there will be the opportunity to work on wildlife photography and journalism, hands on conservation work and even looking at how zoos work and why they are important.

Alongside our sessions, those involved will be able to put their work towards achieving their Crest and John Muir awards. These awards are recognised significantly in the wildlife conservation and zoo communities, making them an excellent start for aspiring biologists. Get in touch today to apply for your place! We look forward to meeting you soon.”
