Departmental Intent:
The Catholic Education Service and our school’s Religious Education curriculum are devoted to forming young people who are not only informed about their faith but transformed by it. Guided by the new Religious Education Directory (2023), our mission is to ensure that every pupil:
- Becomes religiously literate – able to engage with the deep truths of faith and respond to them with understanding and confidence;
- Develops the knowledge, understanding, and skills – appropriate to their age and capacity – to reflect spiritually and respond to the mystery of God;
- Learns to think ethically and theologically, fostering a sense of moral responsibility rooted in Gospel values;
- Grows in awareness of the demands and beauty of religious commitment in everyday life.
As the RED states: "Religious Education in Catholic schools aims to promote a deep and profound encounter with the person of Jesus Christ." This encounter lies at the heart of our curriculum, nurturing young people to live lives of purpose, compassion, and hope.
Religious Education is a rigorous academic subject that develops critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and clear communication. It supports success across the curriculum – enriching understanding in subjects like English, History, Science, and Citizenship. In the words of Pope Francis: “Education is an act of hope,” and through Religious Education, we equip students not just for exams, but for a meaningful life rooted in faith, service, and integrity.

Bookflix is our reading incentive and is linked to rewards through achievement points and other prizes when children read specific numbers of books.
Bookflix displays are in every classroom, which gives teachers the opportunity to recommend books to read around each subject. Children should see which books are trending and newly added, just like the home screen on Netflix!
Here is the list of the current Bookflix books for the department:
The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe CS Lewis
Life of Pi Yann Martel
Sophie’s World Jostein Gaarder
A Very Large Expanse of Sea Mafi Tahereh
Heretics Anonymous Katie Henry
