Child Protection

ST ANTONY’S ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL SAFEGUARDING STATEMENT

All students deserve the opportunity to achieve their full potential. St Antony’s fully recognises its responsibilities, under Section 175 of the 2002 Education Act, to have arrangements in place to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Safeguarding legislation and government guidance says that safeguarding means:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment
  • Preventing impairment of children’s health or development
  • Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcome

Safeguarding includes child protection, health care plans, health and safety, site security, safety on school trips, anti-bullying work and so much more.

We recognise that for our pupils, high self-esteem, confidence, supportive friends and clear lines of communication with a trusted adult assists with the safeguarding of our children. We will therefore:

  1. Establish and maintain an ethos where pupils feel secure and are encouraged to talk and are listened to.
  2. Ensure that pupils know where there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried or are in difficulty.
  3. Include in the curriculum activities and opportunities for PSHE, which equip pupils with the skills they need to stay safe from abuse. Further information about these activities and opportunities can be obtained from the school’s website.
  4. Include in the curriculum materials which will help pupils develop realistic attitudes to the responsibilities of adult life.
  5. Ensure that wherever possible every effort will be made to establish effective working relationships with parents and colleagues from other agencies/institutions.

Dedicated Child Protection Team

Whilst Child Protection is the responsibility of everyone within the school, we have a dedicated team who work actively to ensure that our children are fully protected and supported. They work closely with outside agencies in order to ensure that our pupils are offered the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Our Child Protection Team consists of:

Operation Encompass

Our school is part of a project, which is run between Trafford Local Authority, schools and Greater Manchester Police. The project called Operation Encompass, has been designed to provide early reporting of any domestic abuse incidents that occur outside school, which might have an impact on a child in school. This is communicated through a secure email to school following an incident.

The project ensures that at least one member of the school staff, known as the Key Adult, is available to liaise with children’s services and the police and to use the information that has been shared, in confidence.

In this way, we aim to support each child who has been involved in, or witnessed, a domestic abuse incident.

The Key Adult at St Antony’s Roman Catholic School is Mr K. Speake.

If he receives an Encompass notification he will make sure that a person the child trusts is available to help – if the child needs this. Most of the time this support is silent; keeping a careful eye on him or her and making sure the child has a calm school day. The confidential information is ordinarily not shared with all staff, just an agreement on how to help, if needed.

All schools have a duty to share any information with other organisations if they feel a child is at risk of being hurt. The Key Adult may contact other organisations.

The sharing of information from the police allows the school to be ready to help your child straight away, and it means that parents are aware that the Key Adult knows that something has happened. Parents can come and talk to our Key Adult. The Key Adult can point you towards other people that can help.

Our aim is to support children and their families.

All staff receive annual Child Protection and Safeguarding update training and are aware of the procedures for passing on concerns within school. If any members of the school or local community have concerns about the welfare of a child in the school, please pass them on to the School Child Protection Team.
